Named
in honor of Saint Colmcille or Saint Columba, Glencolmcille
offers the wouldbe traveller a wealth of heritage sites
to visit. Perhaps the most important of these sites is the
standing stone of Glencolmcille (Pictured below).

Glencolmcille,
located 11 miles outside Killybegs in South East Donegal.

The
Standing Stone:
| This
great relic is believed to have been erected in and around
the time of Saint Columba. It was believed to have been
erected after the Saint had driven the demons from Donegal. |

The
Folk Village:
|
The
Glencolmcille folk village was constructed by Fr. James
McDyer, to honor the wonderful heritage sites on offer
in Glencolmcille. The village itself is made up of replica
houses from the 1700, 1800 and 1900's. It offers a vistor
a unique insight into the people of the land, and the
way in which they lived.

Above
we can see an example of the humble dwellings of the people of
Glencolmcille. Many such cottages are still in use today.

The Deserted Port:

Believed
by many to be one of the earliest maritime ports in Co Donegall,
The Deserted Village or port provided the early settlers
in Co donegal with a means of travel and survival via fishing.
