Named in honor of Saint Colmcille or Saint Columba, Glencolmcille offers the wouldbe traveller a wealth of heritage sites to visit. Perhaps the most important of these sites is the standing stone of Glencolmcille (Pictured below).

Glencolmcille, located 11 miles outside Killybegs in South East Donegal.

The Standing Stone:

This great relic is believed to have been erected in and around the time of Saint Columba. It was believed to have been erected after the Saint had driven the demons from Donegal.

The Folk Village:

The Glencolmcille folk village was constructed by Fr. James McDyer, to honor the wonderful heritage sites on offer in Glencolmcille. The village itself is made up of replica houses from the 1700, 1800 and 1900's. It offers a vistor a unique insight into the people of the land, and the way in which they lived.

Above we can see an example of the humble dwellings of the people of Glencolmcille. Many such cottages are still in use today.

The Deserted Port:

Believed by many to be one of the earliest maritime ports in Co Donegall, The Deserted Village or port provided the early settlers in Co donegal with a means of travel and survival via fishing.
