We woke at 7:00am and packed up our gear. It must be noted that packing up Mountain Hardwear Lamina sleeping bags in the small confines of a tent is a terrible ordeal. The daily ritual of packing up our gear only got harder the higher we got!!! We headed off around 8:00am and started our ascent to Shira Camp 2. As we were on the 7 day Lemosho trek we basically bypassed Shira camp one and headed straight for camp 2.

Packing up our gear, abou to leave Big Tree Camp We emerge from the forest, our first view of Meru from Kili Kibo hides behind the clouds, on the trail to Shira Camp 1

The trail was very dusty once we got out of the forest. Once out of the tree cover however we had an excellent view of the surrounding valley, and caught our first glimpses of Kibo!! After about 4 hours on the trail we reached Shira Camp 1 where we stopped for lunch. Lunch consisted of a sambo, some juice, a banana and usually some biscuits.

After filling up our water bottles we set off again towards Shira Camp 2. It was along this trail that we saw the second casuality of Kili. A woman was on her way back down with 2 porters ensuring she made it safely.

Shira Camp 1, lunch time! On the trail to Shira Camp 2 Shira Camp 2, (3850m)

After about 3 and a half hours on the trail we reasched Shira Camp 2.Like the forest camp before Shira camp 2 was busy, with tents everywhere. Even managed to get a mobile phone signal here, so if you fancy venturing out onto the rock outcropping around Shira 2 you can get a message out to those at home!
